Today the Atlanta Lions Club screened 122 school age children at the Connect Church Sports Camp in Decatur. In less than two hours Lion Jotham Reubel, Club President Wes Gifford, and Lions Gary Martin and Sandrea Reubel found 33 children needing further evaluation.
Each screening took only seconds per child, required no preparation and was as easy as taking a snapshot. Children stood approximately three feet away from the screening device. A pass/refer system gave Lion’s a list of those children who should have follow up by eye care professionals. In the Club’s previous vision screening 3 Atlanta Lions screened, with one screening device and the cooperation of the teaching staff, 104 preschool children in less than 90 minutes. We would like to thank our own Lions Club Member Cyd McDowell, President of Plusoptix, Inc. for loaning out this terrific technology until we can raise funds to purchase our own club device.
On Thursday, July 23rd at the culmination of the sports camp Lions Jotham & Sandrea Reubel and Lion Shondeana Crew-Morris will be conducting further vision screenings. They will also be meeting with each referred child’s parent to go over the screening results and stress the importance of seeing an eye care professional for a full eye examination. Each parent will receive a letter from the Atlanta Lions Club explaining the purpose of the screening, a print out of their child’s results, and resources for the parents in getting the needed care.
The Atlanta Lions Club is focused on vision screening preschool aged children where screening can have the greatest impact on a child’s life. The Atlanta Lions Club is a supporter of the Lions Kidsight USA Program and also works closely with the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation, a 501c(3) organization focused on providing vision and hearing services to underinsured Georgians.
