ATL Lions to Vision Screen @ ATL Fire Rescue Back-To-School Supply Drive

FireAugust 1, 2015

The Atlanta Lions Club will be conducting free vision screenings at a back-to-school event hosted by the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department.  The Fire Department will be providing school supplies and backpacks for needy children of the South Atlanta neighborhoods just south of Turner Fields.  On July 18th Atlanta Lions members met representatives from the Fire Department at the Yo Boulevard Block Party and then were invited to participate as community sponsor.  Two or three Lions will be tucked away in the Fire Chief’s office screening children who attend and wish to have their eyes checked for low visual acuity.

The location of the event is Fire Station 2, 1568 Jonesboro Road, SE  Atlanta, GA  30315 from 12 pm to 4 pm.

Please contact Lion Jotham Reubel or Gary Martin if you would like to participate.

Bringing the World Into Focus – Atlanta Lions Vision Screen 122 Children

Today the Atlanta Lions Club screened 122 school age children at the Connect Church Sports Camp in Decatur.  In less than two hours Lion Jotham Reubel, Club President Wes Gifford, and Lions Gary Martin and Sandrea Reubel found 33 children needing further evaluation.

Each screening took only seconds per child, required no preparation and was as easy as taking a snapshot.  Children stood approximately three feet away from the screening device.  A pass/refer system gave Lion’s a list of those children who should have follow up by eye care professionals.  In the Club’s previous vision screening 3 Atlanta Lions screened, with one screening device and the cooperation of the teaching staff, 104 preschool children in less than 90 minutes.  We would like to thank our own Lions Club Member Cyd McDowell, President of Plusoptix, Inc. for loaning out this terrific technology until we can raise funds to purchase our own club device.

On Thursday, July 23rd at the culmination of the sports camp Lions Jotham & Sandrea Reubel and Lion Shondeana Crew-Morris will be conducting further vision screenings.  They will also be meeting with each referred child’s parent to go over the screening results and stress the importance of seeing an eye care professional for a full eye examination.  Each parent will receive a letter from the Atlanta Lions Club explaining the purpose of the screening, a print out of their child’s results, and resources for the parents in getting the needed care.
